TEHRAN (IQNA) – Top participants in a regional Quran memorization and Tajweed competition in Mauritania were awarded in a ceremony on July 1 in Nouakchott, the capital.

According to alakhbar.info, Akah Walad Abitat from Mauritania bagged the first prize and Hisham Al-Dawi from Algeria and Mudi Joub from Gambia were both the second rank winners of the competition.

The three top winners received cash prizes of 3 million and 1.5 Mauritanian ouguiyas, respectively.

The Islamic Affairs Ministry of Mauritania organized the first edition of the contest from June 29 to July 1.

Representatives of a number of African countries, including Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal, Algeria, Gambia, and Mali competed in the Quranic event named after Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a country in the Maghreb region of western North Africa.

The country’s population is estimated to be about 4 million and virtually all Mauritanians are Muslims.
