Tunisians’ Keenness to Memorize Quran Unmatched
Speaking to IQNA, Akram bin Zakariya al-Balghouti, who came fifth in the memorization category of the contest, said Quranic sessions known as Halaqat al-Quraniya in mosques are the main venues for learning the Quran in his country.
He said people in Tunisia are very enthusiastic about memorizing the Holy Book.
“For example, in my hometown, which is a small town in north of the country, we celebrate graduation of at least one Quran memorizer every two weeks.”
The 24-year-old Quran memorizer, who studies engineering in the University of Tunis, added that those who have memorized the Quran recite the Quran before a master to get a degree or certificate from the master and be recognized as a Hafiz (Quran memorizer).
Elsewhere, al-Balghouti referred to Iran’s international Quranic event, and said organizing it in two rounds in order to select qualified contenders for the finals helped to enhance the quality of the competition.
He also noted that he has so far represented his country in several international Quran contests, including those in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Mauritania.
The 36th International Quran Competition of the Islamic Republic of Iran as well as international Quran contests for women, visually-impaired, seminary students and school students were organized in Iran on April 10-14 with the participation of Qaris and Quran memorizers from 84 countries.
