TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Kenyan Qari who is planned to represent his country at the 6th International Quran Competition for Muslim Students described Quran contests as an opportunity for enhancing Quranic skills.

Speaking to IQNA, Salem Muhammad Salem such Quranic events also provide a venue for learning about other countries’ Quranic communities and their styles and methods of Quran teaching.

He said that, furthermore, Quran competition help to encourage the youth to learn the Quran and memorize its verses.

The 6th edition of the International Quran Competition for Muslim Students is slated to be held in the holy city of Mashhad, northeast Iran, on January 31- February 3, 2017.

The Iranian Academics Quranic Activities Organization, affiliated to the Iranian Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research, has organized the competition biennially since 2006 with the aim of promoting unity and cooperation among Muslim world students and elevating the level of Quranic activities.

Salem noted that he attended the previous edition of the contest and expressed hopes that he will win a title this time round.

He further referred to the importance of acting upon the teachings of the Holy Quran in addition to reading and memorizing it.

The Kenyan Qari stressed that learning the meaning of the Quran’s verses by using Quran exegeses, contemplating the verses, and implementing the Holy Book’s teachings in one’s everyday life are necessary.

Elsewhere, Salem referred to his Quranic activities, saying he started learning Quran recitation and memorizing the Quran at the age of 5 and still continues learning the Holy Book.

Salem, who lives in Mombasa, a city on the coast of Kenya, also said that although the majority of people in the East African country are Christian, there are many Quran memorization schools and Quranic institutes active in the country.
