TEHRAN (IQNA) – Sayyid Adel al-Yaseri was appointed as the new head of the Supreme Quran Council of Iraq’s holy and pilgrimage sites.

According to Qaaf news agency, he will replace Sheikh Ala Mushin as the president of the council.

Al-Yaseri previously served as head of the Quran center of the Grand Mosque in Kufa, south of Iraq.

He was selected to head the council in a meeting in the holy city of Najaf.

The meeting was attended by directors of Dar-ol-Quran centers of different cities.

The Supreme Quran Council of Iraq’s holy and pilgrimage sites was established in September 2016.

Quranic activities have significantly developed in Iraq since the 2003 overthrow of former dictator Saddam Hussein.

There has been a growing trend of Quranic programs such as competitions, recitation sessions and educational programs held in the country in recent years.
