Speaking to IQNA, Ali Mohammad Sabeqi said holding such Quranic events can be one way to further acquaint the youth, especially university students, with the Quran.

He said Iran’s hosting of the contest is also important as it helps to thwart negative propaganda and dispel baseless myths that Iranians and Shias do not pay attention to the Quran.

Sabeqi also hailed the selection of the holy city of Mashhad, which has been named the cultural capital of the Muslim world in 2017 by the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), as the host city.

He said holding the Quranic contest in Mashhad, which is home to the holy mausoleum of Imam Reza (AS), reminds one of the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) Hadith of Thaqalayn: "I leave among you two precious things, which if you hold on to, you will never go astray after me: the Book of God and my Household.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian cultural attaché noted that representatives of Malaysia, among many other countries, will attend the Quranic competition which will pave the way for enhanced Quranic cooperation between the two Muslim states, especially among their university students.

He went on to wish success for the organizers of the upcoming Quranic event as well as the officials of the city of Mashhad in holding programs marking the city as the cultural capital of the Muslim world in 2017.

The 6th International Quran Competition for Muslim Students is slated to be held in the holy city of Mashhad, northeast of Iran, on January 30- February 3, 2017.

The Iranian Academics Quranic Activities Organization, affiliated to the Iranian Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research, has organized the competition biennially since 2006 with the aim of promoting unity and cooperation among Muslim world students and elevating the level of Quranic activities.
