The Islamic Studies Foundation of the Astan-e Quds Razavi is hosting the three-day event.
The ceremony began with recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Vahid Khazaei, the top reciter of the previous edition.
It was followed by a speech by Hamid Reza Tayyebi, head of the Iranian Academic Center for Education, Culture and Researc (ACECR).
The Iranian Academics’ Quranic Activities Center, affiliated to the ACECR, has organized the six editions of the contest.
A total of 44 contenders, 19 Qaris and 25 memorizers, are taking part in the final round.
The contestants are from 35 countries in three continents, namely Asia, Africa and Europe.
The ten-strong panel of judges comprises six Iranian Quran experts and four from other countries.
The contest, which was first held in 2006, is aimed at promoting Islamic unity and elevating the level of Quranic activities among Muslim university students.
