TEHRAN (IQNA) – A senior member of Tehran Municipal Council hailed the significant growth of the International Quran Competition for Muslim Students.

Speaking to IQNA, Ahmad Masjedjamei, who formerly served as Iran’s Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, said that since it was first held in the central city of Isfahan back in 2005, the competition has developed in terms of quality and number of participants.

He noted that some 200 Quran reciters and memorizers from more than 70 countries took part in the preliminary stage of the competition’s sixth round this year.

Masjedjamei said the competition is now among prestigious international Quranic events and Muslim university students from around the word are keen to attend it.

He added that the structure of the competition can be further developed in the future editions and more categories can be included.

A total of 44 Quran activists, 19 Qaris and 25 memorizers, are taking part in the final round of the 6th International Quran Competition for Muslim Students.

The final stage got underway in the holy city of Mashhad, northeast Iran, on Friday.

The contestants are from 35 countries in three continents, namely Asia, Africa and Europe.

The competition will wrap up with the awarding ceremony on Sunday.
