'Patriot Missiles' Failure Reason for Blaming Iran for Aramco Attacks'

TEHRAN (IQNA) –  A Lebanese political analyst said Saudi Arabia tries to accuse Iran of being behind recent attacks on Aramco oil facilities to cover up the failure of the costly Patriot missile defense system.

On September 14, the Yemeni army and allayed forces launched drone attacks on two plants at the heart of Saudi Arabia's oil industry, including the world’s biggest petroleum processing facility.

The US and Saudi Arabia have accused Iran of involvement in the attack, alleging that a number of cruise missiles have been fired from Iran at the Saudi targets. Iran vehemently denies the claim.

The attacks came in retaliation for the Saudi-led coalition’s continued aggression on the Arabian Peninsula country.

Earlier this week, the leaders of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, and Boris Johnson, took the US line on the attacks on Saudi oil facilities, saying in a joint statement after meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, “It is clear for us that Iran bears responsibility for this attack. There is no other explanation.”

In response, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns and dismisses the irresponsible claims made by the heads of Britain, France and Germany about the attacks by the Yemeni government’s Armed Forces on the Saudi (oil) facilities, and stresses that holding a third-party government accountable for strikes that have occurred during a full-blown war between the Saudi and Yemeni parties and for which the Yemeni side has formally claimed responsibility, is per se a provocative and highly destructive measure, let alone that such a measure has been taken before any investigations, without providing any clue and proof, and has been only based upon the ridiculous justification that ‘There is no other explanation’.”

Speaking to IQNA, Lebanese analyst Talal Atrisi also dismissed the accusations by Saudi Arabia, the US and others, saying Riyadh has spent billions of dollars to purchase weapons and military equipment from the US and other Western countries and is now unwilling to admit that these costly weapons have failed to defend it.

As a cover-up for this failure and their weakness against drone attacks, he said, the Saudis have resorted to raising allegations against Iran to pretend it was not the Houthi Ansarullah movement that carried out the attacks, but a powerful country that possesses advanced weapons.

According to Atrisi, spreading Iranophobia in the region and beyond is another objective behind the Saudis’ accusations against the Islamic Republic.

He further noted that the attacks have significantly damaged oil facilities in the two plants and repairing them will reportedly take months to complete.

These attacks will not lead to an economic collapse in the kingdom but will remain a painful lesson for the Saudis that their oil facilities, the main source of their revenue, are within the range of weapons of Ansarullah and the rest of the Resistance Axis.

The drone attacks also had a message for the Zionist regime of Israel, reminding Tel Aviv that the Resistance Axis has great capabilities in attacking unexpected and strategic targets, he stated.

Atrisi went on to say that the Aramco attacks were truly a great victory for the Resistance Axis.
