LONDON (IQNA) – A British anti-racism group has blamed government’s push for racism as a mosque in Harlow was attacked last Tuesday.

A British anti-racism organization, 'Stand Up To Racism,' has rallied behind the Muslim community, which bore the brunt of a recent abhorrent hate attack directed at the Northbrooks Mosque in Harlow, Essex.

The Tuesday arson incident has ignited fierce condemnation from the group, exposing the deeply rooted anti-Muslim sentiments that continue to fester within society.

In a post on their official Facebook page, the organization decried the attack, underscoring how it represents the culmination of years of sustained anti-Muslim prejudice.

Laying bare the systemic issues that foster such acts of hostility, the group's statement did not shy away from calling out the role of the government in exacerbating the problem. “Such attacks are the consequence of a government that has regularly pushed racism since it took power,” it said.

The assault, which unfolded on a Tuesday evening, led to the apprehension of two teenage perpetrators. While they have been released on bail. Law enforcement authorities are treating the incident as a racially motivated crime, exemplifying the disturbing nexus between intolerance and violence.

“Whether using Islamophobia to justify its disastrous interventions in the Middle East or the scapegoating of refugees to distract from its failings on the economy, racism has been its weapon of choice,” the group added.

The alarming escalation of anti-Muslim hate crimes in the UK has cast a grim shadow over the nation's social fabric. Recent statistics from a comprehensive 2022 survey conducted by Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND) and Muslim Census have painted a distressing picture: 42 percent of mosques and Islamic institutions have fallen prey to religiously motivated attacks within the past three years alone.

Though the incident on Harberts Road spared any reported injuries, it has catalyzed a wider conversation about the deeply rooted prejudices that threaten to tear at the fabric of society.
