TEHRAN (IQNA) – Egypt’s Al-Azhar Islamic Center has started the process of selection of qairs who will be sent to different countries during the holy month of Ramadan for Quran recitation.

Like previous years, the selection process is done in the month of Sha’aban, one month before Ramadan.

The Quran reciters willing to be dispatched to other countries are given a written exam first and those who score the minimum points are invited for an oral examination and an interview with the selection committee.

Nazir Ibad, an official with Al-Azhar, said the selection committee comprises Quran experts and scholars of the center.

He said the selection process is aimed at choosing qaris who have the necessary qualities and will promote Al-Azhar’s “moderate” approach when they are sent abroad.

Those who are dispatched to other countries should promote values such as tolerance, dialogue, respect for opposing views, and peaceful coexistence, he added.

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. It is a period of prayer, fasting, charity giving and self–accountability for Muslims around the world.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast (abstain from foods and drinks) from sunrise to sunset.

They also devote a considerable amount of time during this month to reading and contemplating the Quran.
