TEHRAN (IQNA) – The renovation project of two historic mosques in the Egyptian capital of Cairo have been completed after months-long projects.

The Mosque of al-Hakim, one of the oldest in the Anciant Cairo, has been opened for devotees and the general public after regaining its past glory and grandeur.

The classic beauty and humble style of the mosque, dating back to 1302 AD, was restored after a Buhra renovation and conservation process spread over nearly 30 months under the state-run Ahl Elbeit Heritage Project.

The mosque is located in Old Cairo, Gamaliya District, and is nearest to Al-Aqmar Mosque. Next to it is Khan el-Khalili, one of the most popular religious sites in Cairo, as hundreds flock to it daily to pray and visit.

In addition to being a place of prayer and worship, the mosque is a cultural and scientific beacon for the people of Cairo.

Similarly, El-Aqmar Mosque which dates back to the year 1154 and is considered one of the oldest heritage mosques in the region is all set to welcome back devotees and the general public after renovation.

Its historical importance is mainly due to the fact that it is one of the oldest Fatamied mosques in the region, and it's believed that it features the coffin and the head of Emam Al-Hussain, according to historians.

El-Aqmar Mosque or ''Gray mosque'' dates back to the Fatimid era. It was built in 1125 during the caliphate of ''El-Amir Ahkami''.

The mosque is known for its façade which is elaborately decorated with inscriptions and geometric carving. This is the first mosque in Cairo to have such a decoration. Also, it's the first to have a façade that follows the line of the iconic street.

El-Aqmar Mosque was restored in the nineteenth century during the reign of Muhammad 'Ali by Amir Sulayman Agha al-Silahdar, who built the mosque across the street.
