TEHRAN (IQNA) – Master Abulainain Shuaisha was known as the Sheikh ul-Qurra (chief of qaris) of Egypt. He was a legendary Quran reciter and the last figure from the Arab country’s ‘golden generation’ of qaris.

Born on August 22, 1922, Abulainain Shuaisha spent his life in trying to revive genuine styles of recitation. He was described as an epical figure in Quran recitation and the owner of a ‘metal voice’.

He began recitation of Quran at an early age and soon entered Quranic circles attended by prominent qaris. Some have considered him to be an unrepeatable character in the field of Quran recitation.

Shuaisha had a genuine voice that was described as a “metal voice” because it was very strong and iron-like and had reverberation.

Many qaris try to imitate the recitation style of Master Shuaisha but no one can fully do it because his style and voice were unique and very difficult to imitate.

He, along with Abdul Basit Abdul Samad, was a co-founder of Egypt’s Union of Quran Reciters, and in 1988, he became the president of the union.

Shuaisha travelled to many countries for reciting the Quran and was honored for his brilliant recitations in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and Jordan, among others.

He was the first Egyptian Qari who recited the Quran at al-Aqsa Mosque in the holy city of Quds (Jerusalem).

Shuaisha also travelled to Iran several times and served as a member of panel of judges in a number of international Quran competitions in the country.

The renowned Qari died on June 23, 2011, at the age of 89 after battling with an illness for three months.

The following footage features Shuaisha’s recitation of verses from Surah al-Infitar recorded at Cairo’s Imam Hussein (AS) Mosque in 1974.
