TEHRAN (IQNA) – A seminary lecturer says the West’s liberal perspective on sexual issues is “irresponsible”.

This is according to Maryam Modammeli who made the remarks while addressing a conference centering on Quran’s perspective on sexual ethics. What follows is a summary of her remarks:

Love and showing affection and commitment to others are values cherished across all cultures, though they hold a special place in Islam. Conversely, betrayal is universally looked down upon.

Islam not only sees the human sexual instinct as a divine gift but also regards the inner desires of men and women as inherently good and in harmony with religious principles. As a result, it provides specific guidance in this sphere, which varies greatly from some other belief systems.

One such belief system is monasticism, found in Buddhism, Brahmanism, and Christianity, which regards sexual desires as something to be shunned. When discussing sexual ethics, adherents of these traditions emphasize that sex is an unsightly aspect of life, promoting celibacy as much as possible.

Another perspective is the liberal approach, which emerged as a response to Christian sexual ethics. It contends that these ethics don't align with human nature. The sexual revolution was a product of this perspective, leading to a significant increase in premarital sexual activities.

Another perspective within this realm is the Islamic approach, which doesn't align with monasticism or the liberal viewpoint. Interestingly, even Western thinkers now consider this approach, advocating responsible sexual ethics, which takes a more moderate stance. Consequently, in Islam, it is expected that a Muslim upholds chastity and devotion while also prioritizing timely and suitable marriages. Islam emphasizes that sexual activity should be confined within the context of the family.

Islam differs by not reducing human nature to mere lust and sexual relations. It takes a devotional and spiritual stance on these matters.

While some argue that restrictions on sexual desires can lead to increased desires, Islam notes that just as limitations can lead to sexual anxieties, unrestrained freedom can result in psychological and sexual deviations.

The Holy Quran states that virtuous men are suitable for virtuous women, and impure men and women are suitable for each other. This proportionality and harmony are vital components of justice within sexual ethics, highlighting the need for couples to harmonize with these fundamental principles.

In essence, achieving equality in aspects like chastity, modesty, and devotion is essential for the longevity of a family.
