TEHRAN (IQNA) – A feminist perspective doesn't align with the interpretation of the Quran as Islam's ideology and feminism have distinct foundations, an Iranian researcher says.

gender equality in Islam

This is according to Hoda Udeh Tabar who made the remarks in an interview with IQNA. What follows are excerpts from the conversations:

The core principles of Islam and feminism are distinct. Feminism is a modern concept, and it's unrealistic to expect complete congruence between its tenets and Islamic teachings. Islam and feminism each follow their own distinct logic.

The pertinent question is whether women in Islam have achieved their minimum or maximum rights. Islam inherently supports gender equality, but the extent to which this equality has been realized must be acknowledged.

The society during the time of the Quran's revelation had a predominantly patriarchal structure, driven by warfare and an economy centered on spoils of war. This structural context made achieving full gender equality practically impossible, and women were granted only their basic rights.

Modernist thinkers, particularly in the Arab world, address the challenge of interpreting the Quran in the context of today by reconciling the historical context (the time of revelation) with the Quranic text, recognizing the influence of the era on the text's formation.

Unfortunately, after the Prophet's (PBUH) passing, a government with strong political motives emerged, leading to the oppression and marginalization of women. Throughout Islamic history, a distinction must be made between the spiritual teachings of Islam and the policies implemented by various political entities.
